The math program from Kindergarten through 5th grade is anchored in a balance between focused direct instruction and creative exploration. Models and manipulatives ground the mathematics in concrete ways while students are challenged to explain their thinking. Whole-class activities are complemented by flexible small groups to provide extra support and challenge. Foundational skills are regularly practiced so that they become a part of the students' thinking process. Students who excel are challenged to dig deeper into grade-level topics and skills.
Starting in Middle School, students have many pathways through Math. St. Theresa Catholic School employs two Middle School math teachers which allows for multiple class offerings and smaller class sizes. Class offerings in Middle School include Math 6, Math 7, Pre-Algebra (8th grade Math), Algebra 1 (highschool credit), and Geometry (highschool credit). All 6th graders begin Middle School in Math 6 or Math 7.
Placement is determined by testing and teacher observation of the student's work process. The goal of the placement process is putting the student in the right class for her or him to make the most growth. Students who wish to advance to a higher class have the option of taking a Summer Mastery test which demonstrates mastery of the skills and concepts of the class to which they were assigned.
